Origins of Oktoberfest

It’s that time again.  Oktoberfest, annual festival in Munich, Germany, held over a two-week period and ending on the first Sunday in October. The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Oktoberfest IN 2020, FREDERICKSBURG’S OKTOBERFEST WILL BE HELD VIRTUALLY. In September, organizers of Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest announced that this year’s festival would be held virtually on Saturday, October 3, starting at 4 p.m.

St. Nikolausmarkt is held from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and includes arts and crafts; entertainment; German food, wine, and beer; photos with St. Nik; and a Lighted Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. A 26-foot Christmas Pyramid that was built by skilled craftsmen in Erzgebirge, Germany, will be on display through the first week in January.
